Translator helps gives WNC a common voice

ASHEVILLE - When Adriana Adarve moved to Asheville, she started looking for work with a translation agency. After all, she'd been a freelance translator for 20 years. When she couldn't find a local agency, she decided to start her own.
Adarve, 42, personally translates English, Spanish and French. Many of her clients are international companies who need documents translated into English. In this country, she often works with companies that need employee manuals and instruction documents translated into Spanish.She said her goal is to provide clients up to 3,000 translated words in 24 business hours.
"She's very quick and efficient," said Michelle Kaiser, family selection coordinator for Habitat for Humanity. "We always have someone double-check document translation, but with Adriana, there's no need. She does this as an in-kind donation for us, which is a great gift."
When Adarve has more work than she can do herself, she uses freelance translators, although she said she edits all work that comes through her agency. Adarve has a stable of 258 translators from around the world. She works with them via the Internet when she needs help or is asked to translate a language she doesn't know.
Adarve started her business last March, soon after moving here from Florida with her two children. She's a native of Colombia, although she came to the United States as a student 20 years ago. Before she lived in Florida, she spent nine years in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.
Pricing for translation is by the word, Adarve said. She charges based on the number of words in the source document, plus the complexity of the document and the deadline. She offers free estimates and has a $45 minimum.
Interpreting costs are on a job-by-job basis. Adarve's interpreting includes working with a local doctor who serves Hispanics. She attends patient appointments and helps with every step of the process from paperwork to diagnosis to payment.
"I want to build a bridge so people here can communicate with one another," Adarve said.
